Book Review: Filter

Filter: The Von Strassenberg Saga (Book 1)
Title: Filter: The Von Strassenberg Saga (Book 1)
Author: Gwenn Wright (blog / twitter)
Genre: Young Adult Fiction, Romance, Mystery

My Rating:

In this darkly romantic family saga, Rocky Evans searches for a way out of her stepfather’s self-inflicted poverty. Just weeks before graduation, with a plan to go anywhere the alcoholic slug of a man wouldn’t find her, a car pulls up alongside her on the dark streets of Nashville. The young attorney in his flashy car speaks cryptically of the family she never realized she might have.

In a fast paced, heart wrenching first installment of The Von Strassenberg Saga, Rocky Evans begins on her journey to unearth the roots of her family tree. What she will learn is there is a reason some roots are best left deeply buried.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that was so compelling that even when I wasn’t reading it (and trust me, every moment I could steal away and read, I was doing just that), it was still consuming my thoughts. There are so many young adult books out there that, while they’re still entertaining, you know exactly what’s going to happen from the first chapter or two in. This is certainly not true about Filter! It’s not only unpredictable but it’s very unlike anything else out right now.

I still have theories swimming in my head and I can’t wait to learn more about The Von Strassenberg family and what the future holds for Raquel. I also look forward to finding out more about the delectable mystery of William. I feel like we’ve only barely scratched the surface of him and I’m so anxious to find out why he’s so darn mysterious and what he’s hiding. All these question marks make me happy especially when they come at the end of a first book in a saga because it leaves me salivating for more!

Perhaps the most interesting part of this novel is that it is essentially two stories in one alternating Chapters. One story is set in the 1800’s and one in present day and yet it all comes together into ONE perfect puzzle leaving some of the most important pieces out until the very last couple pages. Absolutely brilliant! I’d say there are many more great reads to come from Gwenn Wright after this excellent debut and I can’t wait!

If you have an eReader (Nook/Kindle) you can buy it for $2.99 which is an absolutely STEAL for the quality of this book and it’s well worth the price of Paperback as well. If you read it, let me know what you think!
